DO I NEED ADD MORE SAND AROUND MY PAVERS ?

  1. The purpose of the joint sand is to fill up to ¾ of the paver high STABILIZING them and avoiding spreading or wobbling. Joint sand is not grout. It is important to understand this because many people enjoy the look of joint sand on top of the pavers without realizing that it does NOT STAY. While grout remains on the top of the tile because it is a binding agent, joint sand exists to keep the space between pavers locked together. This prevents the pavers from loosening and helps stop any issues that may arise from loose pavers.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POLYMERIC SAND AND JOINT SAND ?

The main difference between play sand (joint sand) and polymeric sand lies in their composition and properties. Play sand is a natural product used for filling paver joints, while polymeric sand is a mixture of fine sand, polymers, and binding agents that forms a hard compound when activated with water. Polymeric sand provides durable and even joints between pavers, preventing weed growth and insect infestations, making it a popular choice for paver installations

How to fix wobbly pavers  around the swimming pool deck ?

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you address the issue:

  1. Assess the Problem: Identify which pavers are wobbly and unstable. Determine if they are simply loose or if the base underneath has shifted or eroded.
  2. Gather Materials: You will need:
    • Rubber mallet or hammer
    • Sand or polymeric sand
    • Jointing sand or fine gravel (optional)
    • Level
    • Trowel or small shovel
    • Plate compactor (optional but recommended for larger areas)
    • Water hose or spray bottle
  3. Remove Wobbly Pavers: Carefully lift the wobbly pavers out of their place. Use a flat tool like a small shovel or pry bar to gently lift them without damaging the adjacent pavers.
  4. Inspect the Base: Check the base material underneath the pavers. It should ideally be a compacted base of sand or gravel. If it has eroded or settled unevenly, you may need to add more base material and compact it.
  5. Re-Level the Base: Add sand or gravel to the area where the paver was removed. Use a trowel or the back of a rake to spread and level the base material.
  6. Reposition the Pavers: Place the pavers back into position, ensuring they fit snugly against adjacent pavers and are level with the surrounding surface. Use a level to check for evenness.
  7. Secure with Sand: If using polymeric sand, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to sweep it into the joints between the pavers. Polymeric sand hardens when wetted, providing additional stability. For regular jointing sand, sweep it into the joints and lightly tamp it down.
  8. Compact (Optional): Use a plate compactor over the entire area to ensure the pavers and sand settle properly and to prevent future shifting.
  9. Water and Settle: Lightly water the area to help the sand settle into the joints. Add more sand if necessary after settling.
  10. Final Check: Once the sand has settled, check again with a level to ensure the pavers are flat and even.
  11. Seal (Optional): Consider applying a paver sealer to protect the surface and joint sand from erosion and weed growth.

By following these steps, you should be able to stabilize and fix the wobbly pavers around your swimming pool deck effectively. Regular maintenance and checking for any signs of movement or erosion can help prevent future issues.
